TOEFL iBT Study Guide: New Format and 8-Week Plan

The TOEFL iBT changed in January 2026, so preparation should use materials that match the current adaptive task set and 1–6 score scale. The test still measures Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking, but ETS now lists about two hours of testing with newer task types such as Complete the Words, Write an Email, Listen and Repeat, and Take an Interview. Build language control and task familiarity together.

TOEFL iBT at a glance

Reading: About 50 items and 30 minutes across vocabulary-in-context, daily-life, and academic reading tasks

Listening: About 47 items and 29 minutes across responses, conversations, announcements, and academic talks

Writing: 12 items and about 23 minutes, including sentence building, email, and academic discussion

Speaking: 11 items and about 8 minutes, including listen-and-repeat and interview tasks

Scoring: Four section scores and an overall score on a 1–6 scale; a comparable 0–120 overall score is also reported during a two-year transition

What the TOEFL iBT actually tests

The current TOEFL measures whether you can process and communicate English in academic and everyday contexts. Reading and Listening can adapt, so a candidate must respond accurately without trying to reverse-engineer the difficulty. Writing and Speaking reward clear, relevant communication under short time constraints, not memorized templates that ignore the prompt.

• Reading: recognize meaning, structure, inference, and academic information quickly.

• Listening: track purpose, stance, details, and relationships without transcribing everything.

• Writing: produce grammatically controlled sentences, a functional email, and a concise academic response.

• Speaking: respond directly, reproduce language accurately when asked, and maintain intelligible delivery.

A diagnostic-first TOEFL iBT strategy

Use two review tracks. Language review targets vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and comprehension. Task review targets timing, response structure, note selection, and the exact reason your response did or did not satisfy the prompt.

1. Record a baseline in all four skills. A strong reading score does not compensate for an unpracticed speaking format. Capture a sample from every section in the first week.

2. Practice output with feedback. Save speaking recordings and writing responses. Review for relevance, organization, control, and repeated language errors.

3. Use short daily listening. Summarize a conversation or lecture from memory, then check what you omitted or distorted.

4. Train the current tasks. Discard plans built entirely around pre-2026 question types. Use ETS's current official page and preparation materials.

8-week TOEFL iBT study plan

Weeks 1–2: four-skill baseline. Complete representative current tasks, identify the weakest receptive skill and weakest productive skill, and begin a recurring language-error log.

Weeks 3–4: language plus task control. Alternate Reading and Listening input with Writing and Speaking output. Correct repeated grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation issues.

Weeks 5–6: timed section sets. Complete current-format timed sets. Practice concise notes and response planning without adding memorized filler.

Weeks 7–8: full practice and polish. Simulate the approximately two-hour test, review recordings and written responses, and confirm the score expectations of each receiving institution.

How to know you are ready

TOEFL readiness is a balanced profile: you can understand the input and produce an on-task response without relying on a single memorized script.

• Your practice performance meets the requirements of the institutions receiving your score.

• Speaking responses begin promptly, remain relevant, and are understandable on first listen.

• Writing responses complete the task with controlled sentences and clear organization.

• You have practiced the January 2026 task types and understand both reported score scales.
