The May 2026 software change did not change the overall 9-hour exam-day duration or the content being assessed; it changed delivery from longer blocks to more, shorter blocks. What the 16-block structure means
Each block has its own 30-minute timer. You can review items within the current block while it remains open, but USMLE says you cannot return to earlier blocks after they are closed. That makes the 2026 experience structurally different from the pre-May 7 version, which used eight 60-minute blocks.

Break time and the optional tutorial
