Step 2 CK test-day format after May 7, 2026
USMLE’s current Step 2 CK materials state that the post-May-7 format also includes a 5-minute optional tutorial. Finishing the tutorial or a block early can increase your available break time. Check-in: permit, ID, and repeat inspection
Arrive at least 30 minutes early
USMLE directs examinees to report to the center at least 30 minutes before the scheduled appointment. The admission page warns that late arrival can jeopardize admission and that arrival more than 30 minutes after the appointment means you will not be admitted and will need to reschedule within your eligibility period. Present the permit and acceptable identification
At the center, present a paper or electronic scheduling permit and valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. USMLE lists a passport, photo driver’s license, National Identity Card, or another unexpired government-issued identification as examples. The ID must contain a recent photograph and signature, and your name must exactly match the name on the permit unless a stated limited exception applies. Without the required permit and acceptable ID, USMLE says you will not be admitted.
Expect screening every time you re-enter
USMLE says check-in includes screening for prohibited items, emptying pockets and turning them inside out, and possible electronic scanning of your photo ID and fingerprint. Eyeglasses are inspected, and examinees may be asked to repeat security procedures after breaks. Prometric’s policy, last updated May 2026, says candidates are scanned with a metal-detector wand before every testing-room entry and may be asked to raise pant legs above the ankles, raise sleeves above the wrists, turn pockets inside out, and remove eyeglasses for inspection. Test-day timeline
Authorized breaks: what actually counts
An authorized break includes time between test blocks whether you remain at the workstation or leave the room. USMLE’s Rules of Conduct say you should leave your station for a break only when the break screen is visible. If you leave during an active block for a personal emergency, the block and overall day clocks continue running, the incident is reported, and the unauthorized-break screen can appear after a defined period of inactivity. - Use a phone or communication device only outside the secure testing area and only during an authorized break.

Security rules to keep in mind
USMLE testing is monitored in person and through audio and visual recording.
