NCLEX Exam Day 2026: ID, Check-In, Breaks, and Test-Center Rules

At check-in, candidates provide a digital signature, have a photograph taken, complete a palm vein scan, and undergo security screening. Optional scheduled breaks are offered during the appointment, but the exam clock keeps running during every scheduled or unscheduled break. 1. NCLEX ID requirements and exact name matching
The official Acceptable ID page requires a physical, non-digital, government-issued, non-expired ID showing the candidate's name in Roman characters, a recent photograph, and a signature. The first and last names on the ID must match exactly the first and last names used in the Pearson registration.

If an otherwise acceptable primary ID lacks a signature, a secondary ID containing a signature is required under the official policy. Domestic test-center examples include a passport book or card, driver's license, provincial/territorial or state ID, permanent residence card, or military ID. At an international test center, including Puerto Rico under the NCLEX ID policy, the acceptable primary ID is a passport book or card.
If a legal name change has created a mismatch, review the official documentation rules and contact your nursing regulatory body before test day. Do not assume a test center can correct your registration name at check-in.
2. Arrival, check-in, biometrics, and security
The official Exam Day page says to arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled testing time. Check-in includes ID verification, a digital signature, a photograph, and a palm vein scan. Candidates must also complete the required security scan before entering the testing room. Refusing that scan without a pre-approved NRB exception can result in being turned away and forfeiting the exam fee.
Hats, scarves, and coats generally may not be worn in the testing room or while the photograph is taken, and candidates are asked to remove watches, large jewelry, and other accessories. Official guidance notes provisions for religious or cultural dress. After the screening process, the test administrator gives a short orientation and escorts you to the assigned terminal; remain seated unless staff authorize you to leave or move.
3. Belongings and electronic-device rules
The Candidate Rules require phones, smart watches, smart glasses, smart rings, fitness bands, cameras, and other electronic devices to be powered off and placed in the plastic bag provided by Pearson. The sealed bag is stored as directed. Do not access electronics during a break and do not open the bag yourself at checkout; return it to the test administrator to be opened and inspected.

If you require a medical aid, device, or other accommodation in the testing room, verify the approved arrangement before the appointment rather than assuming an exception applies.
4. Breaks: optional, supervised, and still on the clock
The 2026 Bulletin provides two preprogrammed optional breaks: one after about two hours of testing and another after about three and one-half hours. You may also request an unscheduled break by raising your hand and waiting to be escorted out. All breaks count against testing time; the exam clock does not stop.
A palm vein scan is taken when you leave and again when you re-enter. Leaving the test-center building is strongly discouraged because security procedures must be repeated on re-entry. Do not access prohibited items such as electronics or study materials during a break. Personal items you access may be inspected by the test administrator.
5. Test-center conduct
Candidates agree to the Candidate Statement and must follow test-security rules. Prohibited behavior includes giving or receiving assistance, using prohibited aids, impersonation, creating a disturbance, tampering with the computer, or ignoring the test administrator's instructions. NCLEX content is confidential: candidates may not copy, reconstruct, remove, post, or discuss exam items or answers.
Use only the provided erasable noteboard for notes. Writing exam information on your body or another material is prohibited. Raise your hand if you need a clean noteboard, experience a hardware or software issue, need a break, or need staff assistance.
6. Late arrival and no-show consequences
Arrive at least 30 minutes early. If you arrive more than 30 minutes after the scheduled appointment, you may be required to forfeit it. Separately, the official Scheduling page says that failing to appear, or failing to properly reschedule or cancel with the required notice, results in forfeiture of the exam fee and any applicable scheduling fee, invalidation of the ATT, and a case report visible to the nursing regulatory body. Recheck your appointment confirmation and current scheduling rules near test day.
7. What to do if an incident or technical problem occurs
If a computer or software problem occurs, raise your hand immediately. The current Bulletin says that if a delay after the scheduled appointment exceeds 30 minutes, or a restart delay lasts longer than 30 minutes, the candidate may choose to continue waiting or reschedule without an additional fee.
If you believe an irregularity in exam administration or the testing conditions adversely affected your exam, notify the proctor or TA before leaving the test center. The Candidate Rules also direct candidates with administration complaints to contact Exam Candidate Services at 1-866-496-2539 or info@ncsbn.org within 14 days.
