The distinction matters. The Canadian program is not simply the U.S. program with Canadian income numbers. Its eligibility rules, age threshold for parental information, award limits, application windows, and benefit-use dates are published separately.
U.S. pathway: current 2026 eligibility and MCAT benefits
The current AAMC eligibility page says a 2026 applicant must have a U.S.-based home address, must be preparing to apply to medical school, and cannot currently be accepted or enrolled in medical school, be a medical-school graduate, or be preparing to apply for residency. Each household reported on the application must have 2025 total family income at or below 400% of the 2025 national poverty level for that household size.
If you are under age 26 when you submit, the 2026 Fee Assistance Program Essentials generally require parental financial information and supporting tax documentation, subject to the exceptions and instructions in the official guide. AAMC treats the applicant household and parent household separately for the income test.
For MCAT candidates, the most concrete 2026 benefit is the registration reduction shown on the official MCAT Scheduling Fees page: $355 standard registration versus $145 with Fee Assistance Program approval. The U.S. award also includes the MCAT Official Prep Online-Only Bundle, but recipients must actively elect that prep benefit before it appears in the Official Prep Hub.
The broader U.S. AAMC award can include additional benefits such as a two-year MSAR subscription, AMCAS application-fee waivers for one submission covering up to 20 school designations, PREview benefits, and an ERAS discount. Those are U.S. AAMC Fee Assistance Program benefits and should not be presented as Canadian AFMC benefits.
U.S. timing: approval starts the clock, and nothing is retroactive
The AAMC benefits page and 2026 Essentials state that a 2026 award begins on the approval date and generally expires on December 31, 2027. Canadian pathway: AFMC evaluates the award

The AFMC guide states that applicants must legally reside in Canada and that eligibility is tied to Canadian low-income thresholds. For the currently published 2025/2026 cycle, parental financial information is required for applicants under age 25, and AFMC evaluates demonstrated financial need. Awards are limited, so meeting the basic eligibility threshold does not guarantee an award.
The Canadian award provides reduced MCAT scheduling, rescheduling, and cancellation rates and access to the MCAT Official Prep Online-Only Bundle. AFMC is responsible for evaluating applications and deciding who receives awards; AAMC applies the approved benefit to the candidate's AAMC account.

Canadian timing: use the current cycle, not an old deadline
As of this page's August 29, 2026 review date, AFMC's currently published guide covers the 2025/2026 cycle. It lists three application windows: September 15–October 6, 2025; November 1, 2025–January 15, 2026; and February 15–March 16, 2026. Those windows are already closed by the review date.
The same current guide says approved Canadian fee-assistance rates are available for testing dates through October 1, 2026, while access to the MCAT Official Prep Online-Only Bundle runs through December 31, 2027. AFMC also states that awards are not retroactive and that recipients must wait until the award is added to their AAMC account before booking the test.
