What the GRE General Test actually tests

A diagnostic-first GRE General Test strategy

Do not average your weaknesses together. A low Verbal score can come from vocabulary, passage reasoning, or pace; a low Quantitative score can come from missing concepts, setup errors, or arithmetic execution. Your diagnostic review should name the mechanism.

1. Separate content and process errors. Content errors need instruction and retrieval practice. Process errors need a new decision rule, annotation habit, or checking step.

Weeks 3–4: deliberate practice. Alternate Verbal and Quantitative focus days. Write two issue outlines and one complete essay each week, then self-review structure and evidence.

Weeks 5–6: timed sections. Complete full timed measures, compare first- and second-section performance, and repair the question types that destabilize pace.

Weeks 7–8: simulation and taper. Take two official full-length tests, conduct deep review, and finish with light retrieval and pacing work rather than last-minute content expansion.
